MESSAGE FROM THE MINISTER
Sexual offences are abominable crimes. They deeply affect victims, their families and friends. Seeking help for what has happened can be difficult. I want to try to make that decision easier, to reassure people that help is out there. The ordeal of investigation, prosecution and the court process is well known in the community and can deter victims of sexual assault from reporting these crimes. But those individuals who bravely agreed to be interviewed in local consultation as part of our Sexual Assault Reform Program (SARP) not only knew that what had happened to them was wrong, but believed that the justice system was the right place to deal with it. The faith that many victims of sexual offences place in the justice system is something we intend to live up to.
The ACT Government is committed to supporting victims of sexual offences. This website will be developed over the coming months as more information is added to help victims, their family and friends understand the criminal justice system, to enable them to participate in the process and to get the support that is available.
